I was very interested in your literature section. Might I suggest another novel. It may be difficult to find but there were thousands printed in their day and show up on places like Ebay:
Horatio Alger Jr. "Strive and Succeed or the progress of Walter Conrad" Copyright A.K. Loring 1872 contains many vignettes of a young schoolmaster's trials in his first classroom
