National Registry Status Awarded to Michigan Schoolhouse
From the BTHS Website
On Saturday, August 21, 2010, 60+ visitors traveled to Bowne Center to help celebrate the honor bestowed on the Bowne Center School as it was placed on the CSAA National Country School Registry. Bowne Center School which opened in 1849 and closed in 1953, was awarded a certificate from the Country School Association of America, and the official CSAA plaque has been placed in the school entry denoting this honor.
Chris Wenger, Township Supervisor and Sally Johnson of the Bowne Township Historical Society officiated as the certificate and plaque were displayed for the first time.
Among those attending was Suzanne Daniel, a member of the Michigan One Room School Association and board member of the CSAA. Suzanne informed us that we were only the second school in MIchigan to receive this recognition.
Many of those visiting were former teachers who had taught in area country schools and those who had attended the schools as students. There was much reminiscing among the visitors, and tales of fond memories of those days were shared by those who came for the special event.
BTHS also opened their new venue, the Carriage Shed, for the first time. In addition, there were several new displays in the museum. Bowne Center, a "ghost town", was a thriving community in the mid to late 1800's, but they feel lucky to have four buildings still standing that represent those bygone days.
